What encryption strength does this use?
This tool uses the PDF format's built-in Standard Security Handler with 128-bit AES encryption, the same mechanism Adobe Acrobat and other PDF software use for password protection. It is real encryption, not just a viewer-level lock — a PDF reader cannot open the file at all without the correct password.
Can I use this to remove a password instead?
No. This tool only adds a password. Removing one you already know is the opposite operation and isn't available on this site yet.
What if I forget the password?
There is no recovery. This is real encryption, not a cosmetic lock, so if you forget the password there is no way for us, or anyone else, to open the file or reset it. Keep the password somewhere safe before you close this tab.
Is my file uploaded anywhere to add the password?
No. The encryption happens locally in your browser using your device's own processing. Your file, and the password you set, never leave your computer.
Will this work on a PDF that already has a password?
No, not directly. A PDF can only carry one password at a time, so this tool needs to be able to open the file first. If your PDF is already password-protected, remove the existing password with the PDF's original password before adding a new one.
