Modest gains, because WebP starts efficient

WebP is already one of the more space-efficient common image formats, so there's usually less slack left to squeeze out than there would be compressing an equivalent JPG or PNG. Treat this tool as "shrink it a bit further," not as a step every WebP file needs — if the file already fits, running it through again just spends a lossy re-encode for little or no benefit.

Wrong format, or need an exact size?

If your file isn't a WebP, use the general Compress Image tool, which handles JPG and PNG too. If you need the result under a specific KB or MB limit rather than just "smaller," use Compress to a Target Size instead.

FAQ

Will this affect quality?
Yes, some quality loss is expected. WebP compression here is lossy: it trades a small, usually invisible amount of visual detail for a smaller file.
Is it worth re-compressing a WebP?
Often only modestly. WebP is already an efficient format, so a WebP re-compression tends to shrink a file less dramatically than compressing a JPG or PNG down would. Think of this as squeezing a bit further, not as an essential step — if the file already meets your size need, there's nothing to gain from running it through again.
Why is the result bigger than my original in some cases?
It isn't. If re-encoding wouldn't actually make the file smaller, this tool keeps your original file instead of returning a larger one.
Does this preserve transparency?
The decode/encode step preserves an alpha channel if the source WebP has one — compressing doesn't strip transparency on its own.
What if my file isn't actually a WebP?
This tool checks the file and will reject anything that isn't really a WebP. Use the generic Compress Image tool if you have a JPG or PNG instead.
