Lossy compression means a real trade-off

JPG compression is lossy: lowering quality removes fine detail the eye mostly won't miss at normal viewing sizes, in exchange for a smaller file. There's no free lunch here — a big size reduction comes from a real, if often subtle, quality reduction. If the source JPG has already been compressed before (as most camera and phone photos have), there's less to gain: re-compressing an already-lossy file has diminishing returns and can introduce visible artifacts before it saves much more space.

Wrong format, or need an exact size?

If your file isn't a JPG, use the general Compress Image tool, which handles PNG and WebP too. If you need the result under a specific KB or MB limit rather than just "smaller," use Compress to a Target Size instead.

FAQ

Will this affect quality?
Yes, some quality loss is expected. JPG compression is lossy: it trades a small, usually invisible amount of visual detail for a meaningfully smaller file.
Why did compressing my JPG barely shrink it?
If the JPG has already been compressed once (most photos straight out of a phone or camera have), there's less redundancy left to remove. Re-compressing an already-compressed JPEG has diminishing returns each time, and can start visibly degrading quality before it saves much more space.
Should I compress a JPG more than once?
Generally no. Each JPG re-save is a new lossy encoding pass on top of the last one, so repeated compression stacks up visible artifacts over time for a shrinking size benefit. It's better to compress from the original once, at the quality level you want.
Why is the result bigger than my original in some cases?
It isn't. If re-encoding wouldn't actually make the file smaller, this tool keeps your original file instead of returning a larger one.
What if my file isn't actually a JPG?
This tool checks the file and will reject anything that isn't really a JPEG. Use the generic Compress Image tool if you have a PNG or WebP instead.
