How to Shoot a Video That Actually Boomerangs Well

A boomerang plays a clip forward, then immediately reversed, back-to-back, on a loop. Some boomerangs look effortless. Others visibly snap or jerk every time the loop turns around. The difference isn't the software, it's almost entirely what was happening in the clip at the moment it was shot.

One distinction worth making up front: this guide, and Kit-Bin's Boomerang Video tool, are about turning a video clip you already have into a forward-reverse loop. Instagram's in-camera Boomerang feature is a separate thing entirely, it's a capture mode built into that app's camera. If you're looking to shoot directly in Instagram, this isn't that; if you already have a clip and want to turn it into a boomerang loop after the fact, this is exactly the right page.

Where the jerkiness actually comes from

A boomerang has a seam: the point where the last forward frame meets the first reversed frame. If the motion at that exact instant is fast and non-repeating, someone mid-stride, an object mid-throw, the video plays forward, hits that peak of motion, and then the exact same motion has to instantly run backward. Your eye reads that as a snap, because in real life motion doesn't reverse direction instantaneously, it decelerates first. When the source clip ends on fast motion, the reversal has no deceleration to work with, so the seam reads as a jolt.

The technique: shoot a natural pause or a completed loop

The fix isn't in editing, it's in what you point the camera at. Frame a moment that has either a momentary pause at both ends or a motion that completes a repeatable cycle: a pour reaching the top of a glass and holding for a beat, a jump caught right at its peak, a spin finishing one full rotation back to its starting pose. In all three cases, the motion at the clip's end is either nearly still or visually similar to where it started, so playing it backward looks like a continuation of the same motion rather than a rewind. The seam stops being visible because there's no abrupt velocity change sitting right on top of it.

Why shorter clips work better, not worse

It's tempting to shoot a longer clip for "more to work with," but that's backward for a boomerang specifically. Every additional second is more unique, non-repeating motion that has to reverse-match itself at playback, more opportunities for the reversed half to look visibly wrong compared to what your brain expects motion to do. A 1-3 second clip keeps the amount of motion small enough that a viewer can hold the whole loop in their head and not notice the seam. Longer source clips make the seam more noticeable, not less, because there's simply more happening for the reversal to get "wrong." Use Trim Video to cut down to that window before boomeranging.

Lock the camera down

Camera shake matters more here than in ordinary video. A boomerang plays the same handful of seconds forward and backward in a tight loop, so any shake in the footage gets seen twice per cycle, once forward, once reversed, and reversed shake reads as even more erratic than forward shake because it moves against the direction your eye expects. A tripod, a phone propped against something solid, or at minimum both elbows braced against your body will make a bigger visible difference to the final loop than almost any other single choice.
