What error correction does

Higher error correction lets a QR code still scan correctly even if part of it is smudged, damaged, or has a logo placed over the middle — at the cost of a denser-looking code. Medium is a reasonable default for on-screen use; use High if you plan to print it small or add a logo.

FAQ

Is the text I enter uploaded anywhere?
No. The QR code is generated in this browser tab from the text you type. Nothing is sent to Kit-Bin or anyone else — that includes URLs, Wi-Fi passwords, or anything else you put in it.
Do QR codes expire?
No. A QR code is just a picture of data — there's no server involved and nothing to expire. It will keep working for as long as whatever it points to (a URL, for example) still exists.
PNG or SVG — which should I use?
SVG for printing or anywhere it might be scaled up — it stays crisp at any size. PNG is the safer default for pasting into a document, slide, or most websites.
How much text can a QR code hold?
A few thousand characters at most, and the more you put in, the denser and harder to scan the resulting code gets. For a lot of text, put it on a webpage and encode the link instead.
Does a QR code have to be square?
Yes. The QR standard defines a square grid of modules, and both the PNG and SVG this tool exports are square for that reason — there's no rectangular or custom-shape option, that would no longer be a QR code.
Is this a binary or hex QR code generator?
No. You type text, whatever you enter — a URL, a WiFi string, plain text — is encoded using the QR standard's own byte mode, not raw binary or hex. There's no mode here for encoding an arbitrary byte sequence directly.
